How to Know God: Becoming a True Follower of Christ

Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick, male or female – you were created to know God in a deep and personal way. You were made to have a relationship with God, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

How do you start a relationship with God?

1.  Realize that you are a sinner.

No matter how good a life we try to live, we still fall miserably short of being a perfect person. That is because we are all sinners. We all fall short of God’s desire for us to be holy. The Bible says, “There is none righteous, no, not one… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23 NKJV). We’ve all blown it and are in need a Savior.

2.  Recognize that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you.

God’s solution for our sin problem is found in His Son Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 NKJV). This is the Good News, that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die in our place when we least deserved it. Jesus was punished for our sin so we could be forgiven (2 Cor 5:21).

3.  Repent of your sin.

The Bible tells us, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19 NKJV). The word “repent” means to change direction. We need to be sorry enough for our sins to turn away from things that don’t please God and toward the things that do.

4.  Receive Jesus Christ into your life, NOW!

Don’t try to get it all together before you come to God! He cleans us up, forgives our sins and gives us a fresh start when we turn our lives over to Him. The Bible tells us, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” and “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (John 1:12, 1 John 1:9 NKJV).

5.  Remain with Him.

Becoming a Christian is not merely believing some creed or going to church on Sunday. It is having Christ Himself take residence in your heart and life and learning how to walk with Jesus by faith daily. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5 NKJV).

To begin a relationship with Christ, by faith alone, you must “confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, [and] you will be saved” (Romans 10:9 NKJV). The following “sinner’s prayer” has been provided as an example for you to follow…

Dear Lord Jesus,
I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and that You are the resurrected Son of God. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life to You. Would You become my personal Lord and Savior? Thank You for saving me! Amen.

What this means…  If you just prayed that prayer and meant it, Jesus Christ has now taken residence in your heart! Your decision to follow Christ means God has forgiven you and that you will spend eternity in heaven.

Now what?  The Bible says, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!  Therefore be imitators of God as dear children” (1 John 3:1 & Ephesians 5:1 NKJV). It’s now time to put your faith in action, and grow in your relationship with God. Get a Bible and start reading it; the Gospel of John is a great place to start. Go to church regularly to learn more of God’s Word and to connect with your new spiritual family in Christ; we’d be blessed to have you join our community of believers here at Calvary Chapel. And Pray, God wants to continue to hear from you!
